Samsung 30″ Widescreen Flat-Tube HDTV

Samsung 30

For the last week the TV in the family room has been acting up. It had gotten to the point where we couldn’t ignor it any longer. However, after talking with some of the guys at work I relized it wasn’t worth repairing a 10 year old TV. So, last night we all jumped into the car to go TV shopping at Best Buy. I went there knowing I wanted a HDTV. In fact, I kind of had my eye on a Samsung 42″ DLP HDTV. But after looking at several TVs that night, and reaching a compermise with Beth because she thought a 42″ TV would be too big, we purchased a Samsung 30″ Widescreen Flat-Tube HDTV. Although, I suspect that if would have held out we could have walked out of there with a 42″, because by the end of the night Beth was starting to realize a 42″ wasn’t that much bigger.

But having the TV is just the fist step on the the long road to HDTV. To get the HD signal from the DirecTV, we need an HD Receiver. Also, the DirecTV HD channels are on a different satellite, so we’ll need a new dish to pick-up signals from multiple satellites simultaneously. To get the signal from the dish to the receiver means that we need a new amplified multiswitch that will take the multiple satellite feeds and pump-out the signal to the receivers in the house.

Fortunately, we can take all of these steps one at a time and gradually rebuild your entertanment system to get HD signals. Yesterday, we took the first step - buying the TV.

Top 10 Web fads

Top 10 Web fads via CNET.com

I am not sure how new this list is, but I enjoyed having a look at these “web fads.” Although, I am not sure I would call some of them that. Some of these I remember well but I think I there are a couple that I missed. For instance, I don’t remember the Apple Switcher Campaign, or Ellen Feiss.

Also, for a much bigger list of related fads, check out the Wikipedia list of internet phenomena.

In Case of Emergency

I first heard about ICE a day or two ago ago while lisytening to WGN Radio. Then shortly there after I also recieced an e-mail from my friend Amy about it. I though it was good idea…

It was thought up by an paramedic who found that when he went to the scene of an accident there were always mobile phones but they didn’t know what number to call. By entering the acronym ICE – for In Case of Emergency – into the mobile phone’s address book, paramedics can find the name and number of someone who should be contacted in an emergency.

Happy Birthday Bugs!

Somehow I managed to miss this item until now.

65 years ago today, Warner Brothers released a Merrie Melodies short called A Wild Hare. It starred the first versions of Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd.

House Of Mouse

It looks like the The Final Nail In The Coffin for House of Mouse. Disney appears to have closed the final hand-drawn animation studio they had operating. This either means they’re putting all their money behind computer animation or they plan to outsource all their hand drawn animation to non-Disney run studios. I think it’s a sad day when what used to be one of the premiere animation studios in the world no longer has an animation studio. Granted, Disney hasn’t produced anything spectacular in the last few years, you still hate to see something like this happen.

The 4400: Life Interrupted

I know I’m an episode behind, but I finally got around to watching The 4400 from a couple of weeks ago.

Ten minutes into this episode, I was wondering: what did they do? At first, I thought that they were going to pull out “it was all a dream” card. But, looking back on the episode, I thought it was well-done but a bit sappy, creating a love story for Tom in under an hour (and only a second of “real” time) that will, supposedly, carry him through a time of great crisis ahead.

Update: The New Look

Well, after even some more tweaking… I have the web site displaying correctly in both Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Mozila’s Firefox. I’ve also added some Flickr photos to the sidebar on the right. There will be more changes upcoming as I expirement and add features to the web site. So, stay tuned.

How To Make A Paper Camera

A photographer, David Balihar, has POSTED instructions on constructing a pinhole camera. A pinhole camera is a cardboard box with a hole punched in it that captures images on real film. Balihar has also published a PDF plan for the Dirkon paper camera (which appeared in a Czech magazine when he was a kid) that you can print out, cut and construct yourself. It sounds like a neat project for anyone interested in photography.
