Trick or Treat!

WordPress 2.0.5

WordPress 2.0.5 was just released a couple of days ago. I strongly recommended that everyone updates to the lastest version as soon as possible, there are about 50 bug fixes. More information can be found here.

Just the Highlights

  • Sunday, I played in the last event of the Chitown Series paintball tournament at The Badlandz.
  • Saturday, as has become tradition we attempted the corn maze at Keller’s Farmstand, but it is my sad duty to report that after four undefeated years my team lost. Oh well, I guess next year I’ll have to bring a handheld GPS.
  • Friday night, we visited downtown Plainfield to participate in their Ghouls’ Night Out. Matthew went trick or treating, while Beth and I checked out the local merchants for clues to solve a murder mystery.
  • Thursday, was Matthew’s show n’ tell day at preschool. He decided to bring in our hermit crabs to show his classmates.

A Year Ago Today

Looking back, a year ago today. Take a step back in time: October 30th, 2005.

Akismet

I’ve only been using Akismet here for maybe 8 months now, I can’t remember. As of today, it has over 300 spam comments to my blog. I know that this doesn’t sound like much compared to the 100,000,000+ spam comments that Akismet has caught according to the stats on the Akismet web site , but it’s a milestone in itself on my blog.

Akismet has saved me a great deal of hunting down and deleting spam comments. If you don’t have the Akismet plugin for WordPress, I strongly suggest that you get it, especially if you getting a lot of spam comments.

Do you use Akismet on your blog? What do you think of it? How much spam has it stopped for you?

The Amazing Race 10: Episode 8

Not that I have any thing against those hillbillies, David and Mary, but they have the more dumb luck than any two people I have ever seen. After all, what are the chances of winning two non-eliminations? I think they really need to go home soon because it is starting to look like the game is rigged.

Scout: Find Your Photographs in Flickr’s Explore!

The other day, I stumbled upon Scout which allows you to find which of your photos have made it onto the Flickr’s Explore! pages. This is were Flickr showcases the top 500 photos uploaded in one day with the highest level of “interestingness”. Having a photo appear on the Explore! page is the best thing to have happen to any one user. Although, no one really knows what makes one photo anymore interesting than the next, but I’m sure it depends a few simple facts. Such as the amount of views, the amount of comments, and the amount of times it has been marked a favorite, etc… you get the idea.

In any case, if your photo appear on the Explore! pages, you maybe asking yourself; how the hell do I find it? That’s where Scout comes in. Scout not only finds your photos like the proverbial needle in a haystack, but it will track their current level.

2006-08-26 Sherri's Birthday Party 004My best position to date was 211 on Monday, October 9th with this photo that made it onto FlickrBlog.

Number 211 out of ALL the photos on Flickr! That’s pretty cool. Of course, the position changes all the time, but using the Scout tool, you can easily bring up a history of the photo and its position by clicking on the small icon next to the position number.

Oh, and even cooler! The Scout creates a graphic of your results, and uploads it directly to Flickr for you.

The Guardian

The GuardianI have been wanting to sit down for a while now to post my review of The Guardian since seeing it just over a week ago. I wasn’t real sure what to expect when Beth and I went to see it. I knew very little about it, other than Kevin Costner portrayed a Coast Guard rescue swimmer.

While watching the movie, I started to recall past movies, this one reminded me a lot of Top Gun or An Officer and a Gentleman. But, despite the movie being overly long and fairly clichéd, it makes a strong showcase for Kevin Costner seasoned charisma. Costner’s performance pushes the movie along nicely. The cockiness that once defined his screen roles has been replaced by a much quieter, professional persona – a contrast of his “Bull Durham” character. Ashton Kutcher’s character on the other hand… Decent performance, but he didn’t seem to fit the role of rebel / ladies man.

I don’t know if “The Guardian” will do for the Coast Guard what “Top Gun” did for Navy fighter pilots. But this movie does a fine service showcasing the brave men and women who drag many poor souls to safety.

Over all, the action is exciting and there are some great visuals. If you like a good sea thriller, this movie will prove very entertaining. I’d give it a B.

Suit Alleges ‘Prison Break’ Idea Stolen

Suit alleges `Prison Break’ idea stolen via Yahoo! News

ST. LOUIS - For four years in the 1960s, two brothers were on the run, fleeing authorities after a prison break at a juvenile facility. Robert Hughes, wrongfully incarcerated at 16, turned to older brother Donald, who helped him escape.

Sound familiar? Like Fox’s “Prison Break”? The Hughes brothers think so…

Prison Break: Dead Fall

Finally after three weeks of Mondays without Prison Break, it’s back. The biggest surprise of the night for me, well other than Lincoln acting smart for a change, was finding out that Mahone and Kellerman are acting together. Maybe I missed something, but I didn’t see that coming, and I had no idea that the President (or her people) were behind putting Mahone in charge of the manhunt. I assume that they are blackmailing him with what they know about either Shales or the drugs he takes to keep him in line.

Oh by the way, I totally called the “Michael and Sucre are in cahoots” thing, too! Come on… Sucre is a good guy, and it’s not very believable that he would turn on Michael like that.
