Planet Tozer

Check out these really cool looking soap bubble photos over at CR Blog, or look at the complete set on the CR Flickr photostream.

They remind me of space photos of distant planets.

All excellent movies… I’ve seen 9 out the 10. Maybe I should rent “A Clockwork Orange” and complete the list.

What We’ve Been Up To and Where We’ve Been

For any of you who might have missed all the recent uploads to my Flickr photostream last week, I though I’d give a very quick recap what we’ve been up to and where we’ve been.

2008-06-09 Family Martial Arts- Matthew's Purple Belt Test 001

About two weeks ago, Matthew tested for his purple belt and did very good.  He’s now a blue belt.  (Click HERE to view and/or download more photos at Flickr.)

2008-06-08 Mackinaw, MI 069

Also, a few weekends ago we took a mini-vacation to Mackinaw, Michigan where we had a fun time biking and horseback riding around the island.  (Click HERE to view and/or download more photos at Flickr.)

2008-06-07 Lara - Michael's Wedding 023

However, the real reason for our mini-vacation to Mackinaw was to attend Lara & Michael’s wedding.  It was a lovely wedding and I would like to thank then both very much for inviting us.  I never thought I’d ever see the Grand Hotel that close.  Congratulations to you both.  I wish you the best.  (Click HERE to view and/or download more photos at Flickr.)

Kung Fu Panda

Kung Fu PandaSeeing two movies with in a week’s time is pretty unusual for me, but last week Beth and I took Matthew to see Kung Fu Panda. Kung Fu Panda wasn’t on my list of must see movies, but I knew it was a movie that I would most likely see this summer.  After all, Matthew had seen the trailers and was hoping to see it.  And since a martial arts cartoon seemed right up his alley, we were happy to oblige.

Kung Fu Panda did surprise me in a few ways.  For instance, it broke the streak of some not so stealer Dreamworks films, like Shrek the Third and Bee Movie. Unlike my complaint with Bee Movie, this film actually featured some unique, interesting and lovable characters. Also, it offered a well-developed story rather than a film focused on showing off its animation, or crazy action sequences for quick laughs.

The film offers an A-list cast but its one where, with the exception of Jack Black, goes largely unnoticed.  I for one did not realize all the big names behind most of the voices until halfway through the movie. Making me wonder if big names like Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen and Lucy Liu, who are billed as stars, were needed at all. Not that there was anything wrong with their performances, but it almost didn’t pay to have them in the movie in the first place. But I would like to go on record… Ian McShane (Al Swearengen from Deadwood) makes a great animated villain.

As for the animation, the visuals were not terribly lush, but the animation in still top notch. Everything flows and looks great. The animators did a great job of matching each of the characters to their own style of kung fu. However, DreamWorks still feels like Pixar’s younger, more inexperienced sibling.

Overall, Kung Fu Panda was adequate. The movie has a good message. I’d give this movie a B.

Jericho’s Alternate Ending

When CBS canceled Jericho, we - the viewers - were given a positive end to the series. Well, video of Jericho’s alternate ending was recently released, and now we know what the season’s cliffhanger would have looked like if the show wasn’t canceled.

But since I’ve given up almost all hope that Jerico will ever return, I’ll take what I can get. Check out the video, it’s cool to watch how everything plays out.
